Harrow-born Dev Patel was nominated as Best Supporting Actor at the 89th Academy Awards for his role in the recent Garth Davis-directed film, Lion.
Patel, who grew up in Rayners Lane, is only the third actor of Indian descent to ever receive an Oscar nomination.
He scooped a Bafta award in the same category in February 2017. Patel has previously received Bafta recognition: he was shortlisted for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2008 when he starred in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
A former pupil at Whitmore High School in Harrow, Patel initially found fame as Anwar Kharral in the first two series of television teen drama Skins and later featured in HBO series The Newsroom. Other films he has acted in include The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Road Within.
For his part in Lion, Patel was also nominated for a Golden Globe, as well as Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild awards.
